You may have used it already ... it used to be called Netsaint.

What is it and how does it work?

doesn't do the checks itself, uses 'commands'
sort of just oversees everything
configuration files
Nagios gets it's flexibility (and headaches) from their flexibility
servers, printers, hostgroups, commands, contacts ... everything is done here ... duh!

lots come pre-packaged, but it's easy to add your own
